Shetland textiles have for centuries been loved and admired across the globe. With our characterful sheep and instantly recognisable styles of Fair Isle and Shetland Lace knitting, the Shetland islands have long been associated with a thriving local wool industry. At the heart of this industry is Jamieson & Smith, Shetland Woolbrokers, who have been buying and selling Real Shetland Wool since the 1930s. Today, Jamieson & Smith is run by a skilled and passionate team who continue to build on the company's proud legacy. Inside this book, you'll find out about the people who founded, built and sustained the Shetland Woolbrokers, and discover the history of this world-famous textile brand. To celebrate both our heritage and our future, we've commissioned ten handknit designs. Drawing on the distinctive legacies of Shetland Lace and Fair Isle knitting, worked in our yarns, and photographed right here in Shetland, these signature handknits unite the story of Shetland wool together with the rich textile heritage of the islands.
Designs from Sandra Manson, Kharis Leggate, Ella Gordon, Mary Henderson, Gudrun Johnston, Mary Jane Mucklestone, Lesley Smith.

Fair Isle Weekend takes you on an exciting trip to Fair Isle, a windswept island in Shetland, famous for its traditional colourwork knitting. During her many trips to Fair Isle, Mary Jane has been fascinated and inspired by the island's rich textile traditions, learning about Fair Isle knitting by looking at old textiles and sharing stories and knowledge around a cup of tea. Now, she has created a gorgeous collection of designs which she would take with her for a weekend trip to Shetland when a carry-on bag is all you take with you.
'So I invite you to join us, this small band of traveling friends, sharing a little glimpse of the isle from my outsiders perspective. I offer you a small collection in my own style of Fair Isle knitting, which I hope honours the tradition, even though my work isn't especially traditional.'
Mary Jane Mucklestone is a knitwear designer, teacher and author who has specialized in Fair Isle knitting, also called stranded knitting. Her work has been featured in publications like Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits and various books. Mary Jane has a varied background in art and textiles earning a BFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, studying fashion at Parsons School of Design and Textiles and Historic Costume at the University of Washington. With her friend Gudrun Jonston, they host popular once in a lifetime trips to Shetland. Fair Isle Weekend will be her fifth book. Find more about Mary Jane at MaryJaneMucklestone.com.

Issue 37: Summer 2021
Swooping into Summer with knit and crochet patterns which will make your soul soar! For Issue 37, we asked the designers to take their inspiration from the alluring textures and glorious colours of birds. These talented individuals have taken our cue and stretched their wings! We were so impressed with their imaginative interpretations of our theme as they have thought so carefully about every aspect of these animals: from the shape of their footprints in snow to their sky formations. Within the pages of our Summer 2021 collection, you can expect nine patterns which are as elegant and dynamic as the airborne creatures they reference.
Featuring designs by: Allison Lutes, Carlie Olfert, Chloe Elizabeth Birch, Kjerstin Rovetta, Ksenia Naidyon, Sandra Gutierrez, Sari Nordlund, Valerie Rachel.
In addition to 9 knit and crochet patterns, a recipe, an article, and a tutorial are nested into the pages of PPQ37! Fiona Churchman blew us away with her recipe for Feather Bread (a pandan coconut milk loaf) inspired by the treats she used to buy from London's Chinatown bakeries before lockdown! Be sure to read Solène Le Roux's insightful musings on how birds and humans can adapt to their surroundings. And Nuria Casadella-Puigvert of GANXXET walks you through how to make colourful chains for your sunglasses and face masks for when you're out and about this summer! Included in your digital download of PPQ37 is a bonus tutorial from Nuria which shows you how to make a chain for your binoculars or camera - perfect for spotting birds and snapping a photo of them.
Pick and Mix - The Crochet Project
A collection five crochet garments and accessories incorporating colourwork designs with endless variations.
Using this book, you can create your own completely unique design by pairing your choice of sweater, cardigan or hat with your choice of four colourwork patterns and your choice of four main stitch patterns. They all work beautifully together without the need for any extra maths. We've even included the maths and pattern writing assumptions so you can have a go at designing your own stitch patterns if you'd like to.
Each stitch pattern is written and charted, and we have included lots of advice throughout the book to help you create the perfect item even if it is your first garment. Although the colourwork looks complicated, each pattern uses only one colour at a time (no stranding) and we've added some tips on how to avoid getting into a tangle. There's also the chance to make a patch pocket or a hat to get practice with the colourwork pattern before you dive in.
We want this book to be for everybody and every body. The patterns are suitable for age 2 upwards, are all unisex and offer inclusive sizing and fitting options. We've used a common weight of yarn that is widely available at all price points, so whether you live for indie hand dyed or want to pick up your yarn at the discount supermarket, this book will work well for you.

Issue 34: Autumn 2020
This autumn issue of Pom Pom sees our collaboration with the multidisciplinary artist Ocean Rose. Their theme of 'Home' makes for a dreamy collection of cosy autumnal knits, evoking the places that bring connection and comfort. This inspiration was chosen long before our current situation of sheltering in place, and has brought about the unique challenge of our models capturing this quarter's beautiful knits with micro-shoots in their abodes.
Ocean, known for their naturally hand-dyed yarns, has brought their poetic voice, palette, thoughtfulness and sensitivity to these pages. Our designers have conjured their own interpretations of home with pieces that create a sense of warmth, not just against autumn chills, with references to traditional patterns and their bonds to special places.
Featuring designs by: Sylvia Watts-Cherry, Aurélie Tixier, Tressa Weidenaar, Armenuhi Avanian, Malia Mae Joseph, Audrey Borrego, A L Leong, Isabel Alé, Tiffany Wong, Weichien Chan, ThePetiteKnitter.
Alongside the patterns we have articles from Sukrita Mahon sharing their wisdom on choosing yarns, and Elliot Maud on self expression and belonging in the fibre community. Cat Seixas shares her recipe for a no-bake cheesecake, an easy dish which is the ideal excuse to find the occasion to celebrate. For makers, mending seems to go hand-in-hand and Maya Skylark provides a tutorial for a pocket sized tool kit that you can keep close to home.
We acknowledge the privilege reflected in these pages that show the warmth and happiness of home. We hope this issue can speak to a deeper sense of safety and belonging than just the place you rest your head. As Ocean puts it, 'Home is where you are, where your energy rests, home changes, and transforms. Home is our connection to all we hold sacred. Home is..'
Thirteen beautiful patterns in Scrumptious yarns. Kate Davies says "This familiar hat remains one of my all-time favourites. Knitters seem to love its cheerful motifs just as much as I do, and I was very happy when I was invited to provide some knitwear samples for the BBC TV crime series, Shetland , and Peerie Flooers appeared on screen sported by a somewhat dubious archaeologist."
ColourLab DK Festive Family - Rosee Woodland
A collection of six Christmas knitwear projects.
"Designing Christmas jumpers has been on my to-do list for years, so when West Yorkshire Spinners asked me to create a whole festive collection it was an absolute dream come true.
I have been inspired by vintage ski jumpers and the Danish knitting style of Hønsestrik, which combines different whimsical motifs with bright colours. The knits feature reindeers, hearts, snowflakes, Christmas trees, Santa hats, candy canes and more - there's fun to be had in every stitch!"

Issue 39: Winter 2021
The knit and crochet designs in Issue 39 are inspired by rhythm! Our Winter 2021 collection is packed with patterns which honour echoes, explore semitonal shifts in colour, and include repeating motifs to allow you to get into a stitching groove. We love how the designers have taken our auditory theme and created patterns which highlight the aspects of rhythm we see, such as written musical scores and the visual representation of soundwaves. No matter at what tempo you craft, there's a winter project for you here!
Featuring designs by: Judith Brand, Astrid Colding Sivertsen, Adella Dutra, Ana D, Tetyana Vyazovska, Johanna Kunin, Nidhi Kansal, Keiko Kikuno, Cleo Malone, Valerie Ng.
Artist, maker, and stylist Lydia Morrow was the creative director for this issue's photoshoot! We've long admired Lydia's jazzy sense of style, so we're honoured to publish her vision in our pages. After youve found your crafting cadence, enjoy the two articles in Issue 39. In 'Rhythms of Handiwork', Felicity (Felix) Ford explores the communal and historical relationship between craft and rhythm, while Claudia Khan writes touchingly about the delicate melody of parenthood, partnership, and time in her article, 'A Family Song'. Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin are the authors of this issue's handmade lip balm tutorial, so you can combat chapped lips brought on by cold weather and even have some non-knitted handmade gifts ready for the festive season.
Akoya - Carol Feller
This spring I wanted a versatile, stylish and flattering cardigan that was simple enough to be worn with just about everything. This cardigan keeps the basic styling simple, its short style is worn with negative ease, but small lace and cable details at the hem, cuff and neckline keep it interesting.
As the waist band sits just below the natural waist the wide ribbing pulls in snugly without needing to decrease the stitches. The bustline is designed to fit with a little negative ease which creates a form fitting garment without any side shaping.
Worked from the bottom up body and sleeves are joined at the yoke and worked together in one piece. There is minimal finishing when you are done, just bands and a small underarm graft.

Matilda Waistcoat - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison
This was another knitter’s request. When knitters visit my Skipton Studio I love chatting with them about garments they would love to knit. This waistcoat was the dream of a new knitter who wanted to knit a garment but was nervous about starting it. We decided something like the Matilda (which was still an idea in that conversation!) would be the perfect garment to start with. There are no sleeves (obvs!), only one button and no picking up stitches. Perfect! It is also a perfect “quick” project for an experienced knitter, one to sit and relax with while watching tv, or reading a book or spending time with friends and family, whatever makes you happy!

Oswald Cardigan - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison
This cardigan is another Purl &Jane Studio request – this is one is where I have designed a child’s cable cardigan and I had lots of requests for an adult version…with pockets! I love a cable hand knit, they are timeless. This one is a very simple one to knit. I design my cables so they work together which means after a few repeats the knitter can just sit back and get into a rhythm of soothing stitches.

Worsted - A Knitwear Collection Curated by Aimée Gille of La Bien Aimée is a knitwear collection featuring 14 patterns by 10 incredible designers. The designers all have their unique style and speak to many kinds of knitters. Now they come together to form a beautifully cohesive collection. You can find garments such as sweaters and cardigans and accessories like shawls and hats, with techniques ranging from stripes and stranded colourwork to cables and textured stitch patterns.
Aimée Gille was born and raised in Kansas, the United States, and later moved to France, where her passion for knitting was reignited. In Paris, where she now lives with her family, she first opened L’OisiveThé, a wonderful knitting café, and later La Bien Aimée, a yarn company whose gorgeous hand-dyed yarns are sold worldwide.
With Worsted, Aimée wanted to create a tangible way to connect with people through knitting and bring joy. During the challenges of the last 18 months, Aimée found comfort in immersing herself in creating a new yarn base, Corrie Worsted, and inspired by it, all of the designs in the book are worked in worsted weight yarn.
In Aimée's own words: "I hope that you will welcome the adventure of casting on a new project from this book with perhaps some of that beloved yarn you have curated for your stash or why not go on a yarn escapade and mix Corrie Worsted with other yarns."
Welcome to knitting patterns by Marianne Isager and food recipes from Camilo’s Kitchen. All recipes and patterns in Eat & Knit are built around a fruit or a vegetable. You’ll find six beautiful pullovers, a lovely scarf, crisp pizzas, fresh salads, delightful snacks, fresh-caught fish, spicy mussels, sweet cakes – and drinks for the sunset at the beach. Eat & Knit is also about the need to pause, – and about finding pride in creating with your hands.
Tversted is known for knitwear and yarn, for summer food, for jazz, a lovely, white, long-stretched beach, a unique nature, for artisans, for antique and second-hand shops, for creative village and fringe activities. And for human warmth, awareness and care.
Eat & Knit was created at the former elementary school, Tversted Skole. Here Isager has developed an active modern cultural centre. In Summer, Camillo’s Kitchen pops up and host salon evenings, communal dinners and more.
It was in this spirit that Eat & Knit was created.
The Croft Shetland Double Knitting Collection One - Sarah Hatton and Rosee Woodland
Due to the overwhelming popularity of The Croft, West Yorkshire Spinners' much-loved100% Shetland wool range is now available in DK weight.
Designed by Sarah Hatton and Rosee Woodland, this collection of women's and men's knitwear features modern colourwork, graphic textures and interesting cables; perfect for layering through the ever-changing seasons.
From Sarah Hatton. The introduction of a DK weight in The Croft range was a wonderful opportunity to work with this beautiful yarn. I was lucky enough to work alongside the talented Rosee Woodland who has made great use of the colour range with some stunning colourwork designs. The yarn shows texture incredibly well which allowed me to include some cables in the collection, as well as simple pieces for a relaxing knit. We have included something to appeal to knitters of all skill levels.
From Rosee Woodland. Shetland yarn has long been a favourite of mine so I was delighted to see The Croft DK join the West Yorkshire Spinners range. My designs were inspired by the rugged North Sea coastline - from the coils of thick ropes seen on the foreshore, to the prows of fishing boats and of course the wild waters themselves. Working with Sarah Hatton on this collection was also a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with an old friend, whose beautiful designs I have always admired.

Issue 40: Spring 2022
For our 40th issue we've concocted a knitted dreamworld! Allow our latest collection to transport you to your yarn-filled happy place with joy-bringing patterns which are whimsical without compromising elegance or wearability. The designs reference the seemingly unstructured nature of dreams through floaty fabrics and ethereal embellishments, loose gauge, and by gently emboldening the maker to use their intuition when it comes to playing with colour. As with anything that appears effortless, copious amounts of imagination and clever thinking form the foundation of these designs and they encourage the kind of creative escapism we cherish in crafting. The patterns in this collection vary in intensity; from ones which will allow you to realise your knitting fantasies to others you could finish with your eyes closed. But rest assured, each one will grant you gratification in a different way.
Featuring designs by: Aimee Sher, Allison Lutes, Edda Lilja Guðmundsdóttir, Hanna Lübben, Julie Dubreux, Marie Régnier, Marzena Kolaczek, Pope Vergara, Reed Keyes.
In addition to the 10 knitting patterns, our spring 2022 collection contains an article, 'Making a World' by lilith green, in which lilith talks about her experience of autism and how the act of making provides a haven from a world which prioritises neurotypical people. If your goal is to try your hand at a craft other than knitting, learn how to make decorative Polish pajaki with Karolina Merska, or use Stephanie Ganz's recipe to bake Honeysuckle Cream Puffs, divine!

Bradley Tank Top - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison
This is the Bradley Tank Top, a simple colourwork tank top. It uses the simple slip stitch technique so you are only ever using one colour in the row. It is worked in pieces and then sewn together.
I like to give names to my patterns that relate to the pattern in some way. For me this simple slip stitch pattern remains me of brickwork. So I looked in to the history of brick making in Yorkshire and found there was a Victorian company from Wakefield that specialised in manufacturing braickmaking machinery. They were called Bradley & Craven Ltd.
The pattern includes two lengths, cropped (like the one in the images) or longer.

Issue 43: Winter 2022
Great knits are like great art because they make us think differently, and the process of making can be even more revelatory! Showing us how we can look to, and beyond, our horizons when it comes to our craft, the 43rd issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is inspired by the work of women artists Etel Adnan and Hilma af Klint.
Etel Adnan's work features landscapes, using bold and unexpected colours to portray the places where the land meets the sky, and Hilma af Klint created large abstract paintings of metaphysical meditations that she felt she had been called on to represent. Both show us distinct ways of looking at the world, and at possible worlds beyond the visible realm, just as a knitter or crocheter can look at a ball of yarn and ponder a plethora of outcomes!
Our winter collection of 10 patterns features striking colours and innovative techniques, and bold and imaginative knits that play with pattern and perspective. So whether you fancy a colourwork challenge, or just some meditative time as the sun sets in the sky, theres bound to be something here to expand your crafting horizons!
Featuring designs by: Amy Blackwell, Kjerstin Rovetta, Marzena Kołaczek, Avery Erb, Audrey Borrego, Regina Wimmer, Marie Régnier, Mer Stevens, Sarah Opie
Issue 43 also includes an insightful and expansive interview with yarn dyers Jude Harper and Lola Johnson, and a fascinating dig into the history of the colour pink by Hannah McGregor. We are also thrilled to include a bookmark tutorial from artist Elizabeth Ashdown using the centuries-old art of passementerie, and a recipe for a carrot cake from Fi Churchman that will bring an orangey glow to chilly evenings.

Issue 33: Summer 2020
The theme for our summer issue is the sun - as we've moved through the classic elements of water, earth, and air for our quarterly inspiration we next looked to fire, by way of this life giving star. The designers have embodied its energetic colours and radiance as their inspiration, creating pieces for this season to enjoy from sunrise to sunset.

The sun also shines on Kat Goldin's recipe, a simple handmade pasta flavoured with sun-dried tomatoes and our fun crochet tutorial which accompanies Marjan Gouda's scrunchie pattern. We feel so lucky to have incandescent artwork by Juju Vail to accompany vibrant photography by Shingi Rice, and luminous jewellery from Ilista Studio styled alongside our collection's pieces.
Nora Sleeveless Gansay - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison
The Nora Sleeveless Gansay was first published in 2018 and is the first Purl &Jane garment that is knitted in the round.
It is knitted from the bottom up. The bottom part of the gansay uses just the knit stitch with rib at the sides, so is perfect if this is your first time knitting in the round. It then divides for the front and back, which are then knitted in rows. This top section takes a little time to get used to the pattern. So if you fancied knitting in the round without the tricky stitches at the top then there are two more patterns to choose from – Bray Tank Top and Fabrile Tank Top.
This sleeveless top uses the same cable and stitch pattern as the Woodhouse Gansay (The Woodhouse Gansay is knitted in pieces)
The Nora is inspired, like the Woodhouse, by my total and absolute love for fisherman’s gansays. The history and why they were made is what knitting means to me – a personal hand knitted garment that keeps the wearer warm, dry and surrounded with a feeling of being loved.
TThe name of a repeated tessellating design, like the one I have used in this design, is called an 'Ogee' pattern in Arabesque design. It took me a few weeks to get the design of these blocks right; initially I came up with lots of really complicated ways to create this motif, but in the end it was so simple - funny how sometimes a design process can take so long and then the outcome can be so easy to make!
The pattern for the lantern shape motif is based on a granny hexagon pattern, but I have made a few changes to come up with the curved design the tessellates.
Finished blocked measurement: Approximately 22.5cm (9in) at widest point, 174cm (68 1/2in) long to end of central strip of motif - add extra length with optional fringe.
The Knitted Fabric: Colourwork Projects for You and Your Home - Dee Hardwicke
Brimming with artistic inspiration and filled with patterns for gorgeous knitwear and joyful pieces for the home, this creative and original book invites you to step inside Dee Hardwicke’s world. Illustrated throughout with beautiful watercolours and painterly photography, The Knitted Fabric brings the pages of Dee’s sketchbooks to life. As Dee explains, “I find the process of knitting very similar to painting, with each stitch being a brushstroke of colour. As stitches loop together, they create a knitted fabric, a kind of narrative of art, making and the people and landscapes that inspire me”. Just like the 20 nature-inspired designs within it, this unique book is something to treasure.
Dee Hardwicke is an artist, designer and knitter whose work is inspired by her passion for colour and by her love of the British landscape. Dee’s designs have been used in exclusive collaborations with partners including the National Trust and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Her previous knitting books include A Story in Yarn: How to Design and Knit an Intarsia Heirloom Quilt (Quail Publishing, 2016) and several titles with leading British yarn producers and designers Rowan. Each design begins life in her sketchbooks.

Crochet in Wool Local. This lightweight neckerchief is worked in a simple filet lace pattern with flower motifs at each end. It is worked from edge to edge horizontally working the flowers at the sides of each row across the pattern. It can be adjusted in length and width as advised in the pattern. Measurements Length approx. 102cm Width approx. 19cm
An inkling might be regarded as the very beginning of a thought
After an inspiring residency with the British Council and Applied Arts Scotland, Kate Davies took up inkle weaving and found that the experience of learning a new skill, completely from scratch, profoundly revivified her creative practice. Learning how to weave narrow patterned bands on an inkle loom allowed Kate to reflect upon the interconnections between different cultures and practices of making across the global north and south, and also helped her to approach the design process in a new way. The fifteen creative and colourful projects in this book are the result of such reflections. Alongside eleven patterns for hand-knitting produced in Kates signature clear style, across an inclusive size rangeare a selection of simple projects to weave on an inkle loom. This fresh, spirited, and colourful collection reveals the far-reaching creative potential of approaching design with a beginners mind and asking oneself, what if? Might you be inspired by some inklings of your own?
Book includes 11 garment and accessory patterns for hand-knitting in Kates Milarrochy Tweed yarn, plus 4 drafts for plain and pick-up patterns to weave on an inkle loom.
A Ravelry download code is included.

Within the City Palace complex in Jaipur there are four gate buildings that surround the inner courtyard, which leads to the Chandra Mahal - the main palace building within the complex. The four gates are adorned with themes that represent the four seasons and Hindu Gods. The Lotus Gate, which sits to the Southern side of the courtyard, and is dedicated to Lord Shiva-Parvati was the inspiration for this design. The Lotus Gate represented the summer and the incredible painted patterns within the archway around the central wooden doors feature a continuous fanned flower tessellation and Lotus flowers in full bloom are featured on the facade.
The Lotus Gate alone features a huge amount of wonderful surface pattern and therefore design inspiration, but it is the Peacock Gate, which sits to the Northern side of the courtyard and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the winter season, which is the most ornately decorated. If you ever get a chance to visit Jaipur, you must make sure you go to the Palace and seek out the gates, or, if you're not likely to visit India, you can always search online.
The design is relatively easy to crochet. It is a "join as you go" project, which you could find a little tricky if you have never done it before. The printed brochure pattern includes lots of step by step images, charts and diagrams to help.

With the arrival of winter comes the opportunity to revel in our favourite woolly pasttime as we move towards colder months. While the light and seasons change we can look back at the year so far and take stock of what we've made and learned.
The inspiration for our Winter 2016 issue is 'reflections', interpreted in many ways by our contributors in articles, cocktail recipes, and a beautiful set of illustrations. This theme has also been translated into stunning knits by our designers; abstract forms of shadows, or refracted light on water became the inspiration for the playful symmetry and elegant geometry of these eleven designs.
Featuring designs by: Julia Farwell-Clay, Justyna Lorkowska, Clare Lakewood, Kiyomi Burgin, Sachiko Burgin, Francesca Hughs, Solène Le Roux, Georgia Farrell, Linda Dubec, Tatyana Scotce, and Sarah Shepherd.
Piccadilly Tank Top - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison
This is inspired by classic cables yet, as I do with all my designs, I worked on several swatches to make this an easy to knit cable. One, where once you were familiar with the repeats, you may sit and relax with it knowing when to cable and when to do your knits and purls. I love to design cable patterns that all have the same row repeat in them. The same row repeat means you can get to know what row to cable as I try to make this happen on all the techniques at the same time.
The neck is square, so there isn’t any tricky working out of how to decrease over the cables, and it gives the tank top another classic touch.
I love a good cable and this was fun to knit! I hope you find it fun too.

Rowan Magazine 74
In Rowan Magazine 74 we are shining a spotlight on two yarns – the first being a firm favourite that has been in the Rowan range for nearly a quarter of a century, Felted Tweed, and new kid on the block, Fine Tweed Haze.
Felted Tweed My Way celebrates this very special yarn whilst championing the individuality of the Rowan design team. This is a yarn which is as fantastic for bold and brilliant colourwork as for a classic one colour sweater. The designers do Felted Tweed their way, resulting in a wonderfully eclectic mix of designs and styles which is synonymous with Rowan.
In Fine Tweed Haze we explore our new yarn which is a lightweight version of much-loved Tweed Haze. With a modern tweed look, punctuated with flecks of contrasting colours, it is as perfect for one-colour designs as it is for Fair Isle and slip stitch. The designers explore interesting stitch work and techniques, including top down and in the round.

Join Kate, Tom and friends on a journey through a beautiful corner of Argyll.
Through words and pictures, knitting and writing, history and photography, this book explores the beautiful and intriguing landscape of Cowal, also known as Argyll's Secret Coast. Geographically proximate to lowland Scotland but topographically distinct; separated from the Highlands by land, yet united to the whole of Argyll by water; Cowal's is a landscape of hidden places, surprising tales, and many secrets.
This book celebrates the Secret Coast, but while doing so it also asks a series of larger questions about what it means to make -and make-up- the story of a place. How do we read the traces of the past in the spaces of the present? What do we see when we look at Cowal's marginal and coastal landscapes? Which local tales are best remembered, and which narratives really deserve commemoration?
The book includes 12 brand-new designs by Kate, beautiful photography by Tom, and a series of thought-provoking essays exploring the history, landscape and built heritage of the Secret Coast from writers Alex Hale, Michael Hartley, Jamie Stewart Jones, Gilbert Márkus and Stephen Mullen.

Three from the Top - The Crochet Project
A collection of three crochet cardigans for babies, children and women.
At The Crochet Project, if you cant wear it, generally we dont make it. And our favourite thing to wear is a cardigan. Whether it is a cosy cardigan to snuggle into or a light one to slip over your shoulders to keep the chills off, cardigans are the ultimate all season wear. Cardigans do variable weather and heating systems better than anything else.
We have included an extensive size range to make this a go-to book for everything from baby gifts to enhancing your own wardrobe there is a size to suit every person in your life. The advantage of this is that if you are nervous about the time and financial commitment of making for yourself, you can build up your confidence by making the designs in a smaller size first.
Top down seamless design is our favourite way of working. You can try on as you go to ensure great fit. There are no seams to sew and very little finishing to do minimum time from fastening off to wearing it. Crochet has plenty of natural structure in the stitches that seamless garments hang very well.
All of the designs call for 4ply/fingering weight yarn (although one is listed as sport weight). This is a collection of cardigans we know you are going to love to make and love to wear. Each has a quiet simplicity to it and enough detail to keep it interesting.
All patterns are written using standard UK crochet terminology (with US conversions given in the abbreviations) and charted where appropriate.

Kate Davies and Tom Barr live by Scotlands best-loved long-distance walking route: the West Highland Way. In this collaborative creative project they celebrate their home, their workplace, and the landscape which inspires them every day. Kate began by creating a collection of twelve hand-knit designs, each with its own distinctive story to tell. Balanced equally between garments and accessories, you might choose to knit a tweedy cardigan which echoes the mossy palette of Conic Hill, a delicate jumper recalling a favourite plant found on Rannoch Moor, or a shawl sparked by the energy of the Highlands first electric village. Each design is paired with an exploratory essay which sets Kates designs and inspiration in their richer context. From Rob Roys romantic (mis)representation to the beautiful songs of Donnchadh Bàn; from Loch Lomonds built environment to ways of seeing Rannoch Moor, Kates writing reveals the West Highland Way as, first and foremost, a social landscape with an important cultural history. Kates words and designs are accompanied by Toms stunning photography, depicting the West Highland Way in all seasons of the year.
Why not turn these pages to walk, read and knit with Kate and Tom? Open up this book, join them on their journey, and make your own West Highland Way.

Sark (n) a simple shirt or chemise
Sark (v) to clothe, to provide with clothing
Sark (n) the underlying structure of a roof or building
Sark (v) to line or underpin
In Scots, a sark is an essential layer, the foundation of any outfit. In her new collection, Kate Davies has created twelve foundational designs with structure and simplicity at their heart. Featuring a technique of twisting stitches that produces fabric with a beautifully textured and embossed appearance, each pattern explores the creative potential of the twisted stitch in pieces that are engaging to knit and easy to wear. There’s a comfortable oversized gansey, a smart cardigan with panels and puffed sleeves, a pair of yoke sweaters, a cosy wrap, and an appealing range of quick-to-knit one-skein accessories, all designed with the clear instructions and clean finishing details that are hallmarks of Kate’s work. The book also includes a collection of thought-provoking monochrome images, as Tom explores ideas of pattern and structure in the natural world and built environment. The Shetland Trader, Book Three: Heritage by Gudrun Johnston
Gudrun Johnston joins forces with Pom Pom Press for the latest instalment of her Shetland Trader series. This third volume explores the very roots of the series: the made-to-order knitwear business run in the 1970s by Patricia Johnston, Gudrun’s mother, which operated as The Shetland Trader.
Through archival research and a network of family, friends, and fibre enthusiasts, Gudrun has unearthed some of her mother’s best-loved designs and updated them for contemporary knitters. This collection contains 11 patterns for garments and accessories. Use them to create seventies-inspired dream ensembles as well as heirloom pieces incorporating traditional Shetland knitting techniques and motifs.
The Shetland Trader, Book Three: Heritage asks us to consider the traditions and fabrics we pass on to those we love, and the stories and wishes knit into every stitch.

Time to feast your eyes on our glam-tastic winter edition - all inspired by the Art Deco and Art Nouveau stylings of iconic 1960s-70s British brand, Boba. We have ten modern knits designed through the lens of the Biba aesthetic, which in turn was inspired by even earlier periods. We shot part of this issue in a 1920s style cocktail bar in London and in the spirit of reviving vintage trends (as Biba itself did in the 1960s and 1970s) our winter recipes are new takes on classic cocktails, adding a little extra seasonal spice and sparkle.
Featuring designs by: Bristol Ivy, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Cirilia Rose, Rachel Coopey, Courtney Spainhower, Kiyomi Burgin, Jemima Bicknell, Sophie Scott, Amu Van De Laar, Clare Lakewood.
We are particularly smitten with Katie Green's Bowerbird comic, which beautifully illustrates the unending potential and dreams we have for newly acquired yarn. In addition to lovely illustrations, we have some excellent writing for you this issue, with articles on Activist Embroidery by Francesca Baldry, Lora Angelova's explorations as a Heritage Chemist, and Anna Maltz shares her ideas on beating the winter blues. Our special supplement contains a spectacular jumper design from Oksana Dymyd. ‘Bellflower’ features a beautiful stitch pattern knitted in two contrasting yarns from The Fibre Co. for a dramatic effect. The body and sleeves are knitted sideways, and are separated from the plain yoke by a delicate frill.
Knit in Wool Local. A basic and easy edge to edge jacket knitted in stocking/stockinette stitch and K2,P2 rib with two ends of the yarn held together as one to create fuller fabric. The back is worked from the bottom up with a deep K2,P2 rib and decorative rib stitch at the centre and armhole edges. The fronts have the same deep welt which conceals pockets and wide K2,P2 front bands. There is short row shaping at the shoulders, which are finished with a three needle cast/bind off. The boxy sleeves are picked up and knitted towards the wide K2,P2 cuff.
Everyday Wearables - The Crochet Project
A collection of eight crochet garments and accessories.
Maybe it's the somewhat shy exhibitionist in me, but I have always loved making things to wear. The thrill of being able to say "Thanks, I made it." never gets old. When times have been tight or shopping has been an unpleasant process (for various reasons) I've been glad of my ability to combine my favourite leisure activities with the ability to produce interesting and elegant clothing for myself whether by sewing, knitting or crocheting.
Whatever your motivation for wanting to create a handmade wardrobe, crochet can readily be used to build a wardrobe full of wearable staples. Often crochet has been viewed as "best for homewares and novelties" and struggled to lose the reputation created in the 1970s of ill-fitting granny square jackets. With an in-depth understanding of how crochet fabric is created, the need for drape and taking fit and construction lessons from both knitwear and dressmaking, I have created pieces that fit well and look great.
We understand that making a wardrobe may also challenge your skills. We have included a series of photo tutorials in the book that take the adventurous beginner a step on and cover the skills needed to create beautiful pieces to cherish.

The Fiona Cardigan has become a Purl &Jane classic. It was one of the first designs I created for my Skipton Studio and has been well loved and knitted by many knitters. It’s been lovely to see it become a classic go to cardigan in knitter’s wardrobes. I have a few knitters who tell me they have knitted this pattern in different shades, as they can wear it with everything.

Knit in Scrumptious Lace. An elegant and feminine cardigan that wraps around the body to add style and movement to your everyday wardrobe. A simple Milanese Lace pattern all over the garment shows off your favourite hand dyed colours while keeping things interesting to knit. Worked flat and seamed after blocking, this cardigan contains easy to follow instructions to help you make the most of its elegant shaping and get a fit thats right for you.
Knit in Lace or 4ply weight yarn. Graceful leafy lace radiates outward, forming a generous scarf-sized shawl. For lace (fingering) weight versions finished shawl measures 50 (68) wide and 21 (24) deep. More repeats can be worked to increase the size of the shawl but this will require more yarn. Finished size will vary depending on how aggressively the finished shawl is blocked. If you are adding beads to your shawl you will need a 0.6 mm crochet hook and 1300 (1000) #06 size beads (or more for larger shawl).
Finch - Marie Wallin
‘FINCH’ is one of two designs I have created using Baa Ram Ewe’s Titus yarn and is one of my first designs not using Rowan yarn! It has been such a pleasure designing with this lovely 4ply yarn as it is beautifully soft and a dream to knit with. This design is knitting flat and in pieces so you will need to knit fairisle on the wrong side. It is an oversized shape and therefore very comfortable to wear, styled simply with a pair of jeans or other trousers. My model Georgia loved this sweater so much that she asked to keep the photography garment as part of her modelling fee!
Please note that this design is knitted flat in pieces and therefore you will need to knit fairisle on the wrong side as well as the right side.
