What happens when you bring literary plot and pattern design together?
Margery Allingham was one of the undoubted queens of British detective fiction’s Golden Age, and this bringing together of novel-inspired handknits with critical, contextual essays offers an in-the-round celebration of her work. Kate Davies’ collection speaks to the detective author’s inventive spirit: a single, unbroken strand of yarn transforms itself into a three-dimensional slipper; hats and pullovers are knitted from side to side, while a triangular shawl up-ends itself to eventually become a cardigan. The techniques are all contemporary, but there’s a nod to classic twentieth-century knitting style as well: narrow garter-stitch stripes meet modern short row shaping, while slipped stitches and Art Deco chevrons are incorporated into light knits that will work in many wardrobes. Alongside this most mysterious collection, literary contributors explore themes that illuminate Margery Allingham’s creative world: from the relationship between patterns and plotting, to the fashion, film and popular culture of the 1930s and 1940s; from the wide ranging role played by knitting and knitters in detective fiction, to the distinctive Essex landscape that inspired Margery Allingham throughout her life. Chock full of revelations, plot twists, and (of course) the occasional red herring, this highly original exploration of one of detective fiction’s most ingenious authors is sure to surprise and delight.

From Sarah Hatton. The introduction of a DK weight in The Croft range was a wonderful opportunity to work with this beautiful yarn. I was lucky enough to work alongside the talented Rosee Woodland who has made great use of the colour range with some stunning colourwork designs. The yarn shows texture incredibly well which allowed me to include some cables in the collection, as well as simple pieces for a relaxing knit. We have included something to appeal to knitters of all skill levels.
From Rosee Woodland. Shetland yarn has long been a favourite of mine so I was delighted to see The Croft DK join the West Yorkshire Spinners range. My designs were inspired by the rugged North Sea coastline - from the coils of thick ropes seen on the foreshore, to the prows of fishing boats and of course the wild waters themselves. Working with Sarah Hatton on this collection was also a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with an old friend, whose beautiful designs I have always admired.

Jane Crowfoot Oonagh Cushion Cover

I designed this cushion cover for a workshop trip to the West of Ireland. As the focus of the trip was the knitting heritage of the Aran Islands, that sit at the mouth of Galway Bay, I chose to use traditional cable stitch designs and textural patterns. To give the cover a more contemporary twist, and because I adore a bit of bling, I also added some beads using a slip-stitch method that enables the beads to create a cross pattern.
I used traditional cream yarns as the shade for the first cushion cover with gold and green beads to echo the national colours of Ireland, but I had a feeling it would also look great in red with silver beads, so I set about creating a new version especially for the Festive Season. I really love the way the silver beads sparkle on this cover.
Of course, you can use any yarn shade and bead combinations and I hope you will enjoy making your cushion cover too!
