Jane Crowfoot Gertrude Floral Cushion
Patterns

Jane Crowfoot Gertrude Floral Cushion

£6.95
I love my garden and really enjoy watching how it changes throughout the year depending on the season. I would really like to have a more homely and functional mix of flowers and herbs in our outdoor space, typical of cottage gardens, which became popular in the 1870s as a reaction to more formal gardens. One of the positives of a garden of this type is that they are more easily maintained as the compact planting leaves little space for weeds - something I really like the idea of! Crocheted flowers are pretty much my favourite thing to make and I adore adding beads into my work too, so this project was a real joy to design and make. I wanted to create a vintage feel and chose my yarn shades accordingly. I think the little lime green beads provide a lovely pop of colour on the leaves of the dainty crochet blooms. You could always use this pattern to make pretty brooches or to use as part of a larger, fascinator style piece. I adored the velvet smocked cushions that my Auntie Muriel had on her bed when I was a child in the 1970s. I used to love running my fingers over the velvet pile and found the smocked stitching fascinating. The cushions were just so enticing and luxurious that I remember thinking that I would definitely have some on my bed when I was old enough! I have previously recreated the style of these cushions in a knit design I called Madeleine, which was published in my book Homespun Vintage, but I have always wanted to create a crochet version too. When working on the Muriel cushion project I decided to add pretty bobbles instead of smocked style stitching to make a simple accompaniment to my Gertrude cushion, which features pretty flowers and beads. I have always struggled with the way crochet worked in the round can look like it has a 'scar' running through it, so my challenge for this project was to design something that would hide the way slip stitches appear without having to fasten off yarns at the end of every round. The pattern includes full written instructions, step-by-step images and charts, and is available in UK and US terms. Blocked Measurement: to fit 35cm (14in) square cushion pad.

Laine Issue 22, August 2024 Our Autumn issue Laine 22, Aalto, features cosy yet stylish knits for the season! The issue is also a celebration of architecture — the photos were taken in the Paimio Sanatorium, designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The building’s unique colours and shapes offered the perfect backdrop to our autumn knits, full of interesting styles and techniques from cables and lace to textured patterns. Designers featured in this issue: Anna Daku, Inés García Suárez, Maria Gomes, Gudrun Johnston, Pauliina Leisti, Yukie Onodera, Eri Shimizu, Megumi Shinagawa, Karoline Skovgaard Bentsen, Ayano Tanaka and Maaike van Geijn. Issue 22, Autumn 2024, includes:
  • 148 pages
  • 11 knitting patterns (both charts and written instructions provided): 6 sweaters, 2 cardigans and 3 shawls.
  • An interview with the Finnish knitwear designer Jenna Kostet, who has turned the poems of the famous epic, Kalevala, into tradition-inspired knitwear patterns and charmed both Finnish and international knitters.
  • An article about circular economy in the world of yarn — how recycled yarns can be turned into a sustainable and viable business, with end products that delight knitters.
  • Jeanette Sloan’s column Fibre Talk, where she chats with Alyson Chu: an Edinburgh-based Chinese American podcaster, designer and publisher of the crochet magazine Moorit, among other things.
  • Five Ways by our regular writer Päivi Kankaro, where we get to read expert’s tips for yarn substitutions in knitting patterns.
  • Where I Knit: A regular piece that pictures people knitting in their favourite spot. In this issue, we meet Jessica Antonio-Notarianni who knits at the beach on Jersey Shore, USA.

Purl & Jane Raydale Jumper
Patterns

Purl & Jane Raydale Jumper

£4.50
Raydale Jumper - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison This is a fun stitch to do. It is a magical stitch! You are only using one colour in the row, even though it looks like you are using two at the same time. You are not, just the one, such fun! I love hearing about individual knitting stories: how people started knitting, what their grandmothers, mothers, aunts used to knit and I hear tales of grandfathers, fathers and uncles knitting too. This jumper is inspired by fisherman jumpers, not perhaps the traditional Guernseys, but ones in my own family history where my relatives wore similar jumpers while living by the seaside and fishing for leisure. To create a smooth stitch, I recommend that you s1 purlwise in this pattern. To fit: 1 to 10 years Recommended yarns: West Yorkshire Spinners Croft Aran

Rowan Magazine 75
Patterns

Rowan Magazine 75

£14.25
Rowan Magazine 75 In Rowan Magazine 74 we are shining a spotlight on two yarns – the first being a firm favourite that has been in the Rowan range for nearly a quarter of a century, Felted Tweed, and new kid on the block, Fine Tweed Haze. Felted Tweed My Way celebrates this very special yarn whilst championing the individuality of the Rowan design team. This is a yarn which is as fantastic for bold and brilliant colourwork as for a classic one colour sweater. The designers do Felted Tweed their way, resulting in a wonderfully eclectic mix of designs and styles which is synonymous with Rowan. In Fine Tweed Haze we explore our new yarn which is a lightweight version of much-loved Tweed Haze. With a modern tweed look, punctuated with flecks of contrasting colours, it is as perfect for one-colour designs as it is for Fair Isle and slip stitch. The designers explore interesting stitch work and techniques, including top down and in the round. Featured Designers Martin Storey, ARNE & CARLOS, Quail Studio, Lisa Richardson, Kaffe Fassett, Erika Knight, Georgia Farrell, Vibe Ulrik, Chloe Thurlow Featured yarns: Creative Linen, Fine Lace, Summerlite 4ply, Kidsilk Haze, Summerlite DK
