Purl & Jane Lily Scarf
Patterns

Purl & Jane Lily Scarf

£4.50
Lily Scarf - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison This was one of the most loved patterns when I launched them at my local yarn show, Yarndale in 2019, so much so that I had sold out of them by lunchtime on Saturday! However because my printers are local and so very kind they printed some more and delivered them so I had more by the afternoon and nearly sold out of them again by the end of the weekend! At the end of a busy day, I like to sit down and switch off for half an hour or an hour or so, which is not so easy to do with things buzzing around your head. Garter stitch is a good start to soothing those thoughts and calming the mind. I played around with many designs for the edges and they all looked good but they weren’t all fulfilling my desire for a simple pattern to switch off and relax with, a pattern that has a simple repeat but also looks classic and so I just kept making it more and more simple until Lily was the perfect pattern! I wore the Lily Scarf I had knitted over the Yarndale weekend and it’s so light you don’t notice that you have it on…until you take it off and feel the chill from the air on the back of your neck. It keeps you warm without you even knowing it!

Pompom Quarterly Issue 43
Patterns

Pompom Quarterly Issue 43

£17.50
Issue 43: Winter 2022 Great knits are like great art because they make us think differently, and the process of making can be even more revelatory! Showing us how we can look to, and beyond, our horizons when it comes to our craft, the 43rd issue of Pom Pom Quarterly is inspired by the work of women artists Etel Adnan and Hilma af Klint. Etel Adnan's work features landscapes, using bold and unexpected colours to portray the places where the land meets the sky, and Hilma af Klint created large abstract paintings of metaphysical meditations that she felt she had been called on to represent. Both show us distinct ways of looking at the world, and at possible worlds beyond the visible realm, just as a knitter or crocheter can look at a ball of yarn and ponder a plethora of outcomes! Our winter collection of 10 patterns features striking colours and innovative techniques, and bold and imaginative knits that play with pattern and perspective. So whether you fancy a colourwork challenge, or just some meditative time as the sun sets in the sky, there’s bound to be something here to expand your crafting horizons! Featuring designs by: Amy Blackwell, Kjerstin Rovetta, Marzena Kołaczek, Avery Erb, Audrey Borrego, Regina Wimmer, Marie Régnier, Mer Stevens, Sarah Opie Issue 43 also includes an insightful and expansive interview with yarn dyers Jude Harper and Lola Johnson, and a fascinating dig into the history of the colour pink by Hannah McGregor. We are also thrilled to include a bookmark tutorial from artist Elizabeth Ashdown using the centuries-old art of passementerie, and a recipe for a carrot cake from Fi Churchman that will bring an orangey glow to chilly evenings.

Jane Crowfoot Persian Tiles Blanket
Patterns

Jane Crowfoot Persian Tiles Blanket

£6.95
This crochet blanket design is based on traditional Persian ceramic patterns. The project is relatively simple in construction, consisting of just 4 different motifs; the main octagon piece surrounded by variations on granny squares and triangles. In 2013 I designed a project for my crochet club using Persian and Moroccan textiles and architecture as my inspiration. The resulting blanket was exclusive to my crochet club members, so the pattern is no longer available. It is a theme I wanted to revisit though, as the colours and shapes work so well in crochet and we are constantly asked for a project that echoes the original design. This blanket is simpler in construction than the original crochet club project and there are just four different motifs within the design; the main octagon piece, of which you need to make sixteen, is surrounded by variations on granny squares and triangles in shades of blue and cream. The project is relatively simple to make and I really enjoyed designing it. Pattern available in UK & US terminology, includes written instructions and charts. Blocked measurement: approximately 115cm (45 1/4in) x 115cm (45 1/4in).

Laine Publishing Magazine Issue 22

£22.00
Laine Issue 22, August 2024 Our Autumn issue Laine 22, Aalto, features cosy yet stylish knits for the season! The issue is also a celebration of architecture — the photos were taken in the Paimio Sanatorium, designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The building’s unique colours and shapes offered the perfect backdrop to our autumn knits, full of interesting styles and techniques from cables and lace to textured patterns. Designers featured in this issue: Anna Daku, Inés García Suárez, Maria Gomes, Gudrun Johnston, Pauliina Leisti, Yukie Onodera, Eri Shimizu, Megumi Shinagawa, Karoline Skovgaard Bentsen, Ayano Tanaka and Maaike van Geijn. Issue 22, Autumn 2024, includes:
  • 148 pages
  • 11 knitting patterns (both charts and written instructions provided): 6 sweaters, 2 cardigans and 3 shawls.
  • An interview with the Finnish knitwear designer Jenna Kostet, who has turned the poems of the famous epic, Kalevala, into tradition-inspired knitwear patterns and charmed both Finnish and international knitters.
  • An article about circular economy in the world of yarn — how recycled yarns can be turned into a sustainable and viable business, with end products that delight knitters.
  • Jeanette Sloan’s column Fibre Talk, where she chats with Alyson Chu: an Edinburgh-based Chinese American podcaster, designer and publisher of the crochet magazine Moorit, among other things.
  • Five Ways by our regular writer Päivi Kankaro, where we get to read expert’s tips for yarn substitutions in knitting patterns.
  • Where I Knit: A regular piece that pictures people knitting in their favourite spot. In this issue, we meet Jessica Antonio-Notarianni who knits at the beach on Jersey Shore, USA.
  • Seasonal recipes to inspire your autumn cooking.

Jane Crowfoot Mystical Lanterns Blanket
Patterns

Jane Crowfoot Mystical Lanterns Blanket

£6.95
The name of a repeated tessellating design, like the one I have used in this design, is called an 'Ogee' pattern in Arabesque design. It took me a few weeks to get the design of these blocks right; initially I came up with lots of really complicated ways to create this motif, but in the end it was so simple. It is funny how sometimes a design process can take so long and then the outcome can be so easy to make! The pattern for the lantern shape motif is based on a granny hexagon pattern, but I have made a few changes to come up with the curved design that tessellates. Pattern available in UK & US terminology. Finished blocked measurement - 100cm (39 1/4in) x 155cm (61in).

Purl & Jane Frankie Mittens
Patterns

Purl & Jane Frankie Mittens

£4.50
Frankie Mittens - Purl & Jane by Jane Ellison I designed these Frankie Mittens because several knitters expressed a desire to knit socks* but wanted to practise on double pointed needles without turning a heel! While for me and experienced knitters I love knitting Frankie Mittens as they are quick to knit gifts and are great for relaxing evening knitting. One of the most exciting things about these mittens is that the 2X2 is magical. It fits everyone’s hands! I designed the mittens with this rib for this reason and it is so lovely to see it happen! A gentleman, who said he had larger than average hands, tried on the pair in my Skipton Studio and they fitted him. He then took the pattern and yarn to knit his very first pair of fingerless mittens. The Frankie Mittens use 35g/140m of the 100g ball so there is enough to make three pairs with one ball, with perhaps the last one being a little bit shorter than the others. Or great for using up left over sock yarn.
