Kate Davies Margery Allingham's Mysterious Knits

Kate Davies Margery Allingham’s Mysterious Knits

£25.00
What happens when you bring literary plot and pattern design together? Margery Allingham was one of the undoubted queens of British detective fiction’s Golden Age, and this bringing together of novel-inspired handknits with critical, contextual essays offers an in-the-round celebration of her work. Kate Davies’ collection speaks to the detective author’s inventive spirit: a single, unbroken strand of yarn transforms itself into a three-dimensional slipper; hats and pullovers are knitted from side to side, while a triangular shawl up-ends itself to eventually become a cardigan. The techniques are all contemporary, but there’s a nod to classic twentieth-century knitting style as well: narrow garter-stitch stripes meet modern short row shaping, while slipped stitches and Art Deco chevrons are incorporated into light knits that will work in many wardrobes. Alongside this most mysterious collection, literary contributors explore themes that illuminate Margery Allingham’s creative world: from the relationship between patterns and plotting, to the fashion, film and popular culture of the 1930s and 1940s; from the wide ranging role played by knitting and knitters in detective fiction, to the distinctive Essex landscape that inspired Margery Allingham throughout her life. Chock full of revelations, plot twists, and (of course) the occasional red herring, this highly original exploration of one of detective fiction’s most ingenious authors is sure to surprise and delight. Contributors: Tom Barr, Caroline Crampton, Kate Davies, Veronica Horwell, Julia Jones, Sarah Mackay, Imogen Robertson.

Kate Davies Knit, Read, Walk: The West Highland Way

£19.99
Kate Davies and Tom Barr live by Scotland’s best-loved long-distance walking route: the West Highland Way. In this collaborative creative project they celebrate their home, their workplace, and the landscape which inspires them every day. Kate began by creating a collection of twelve hand-knit designs, each with its own distinctive story to tell. Balanced equally between garments and accessories, you might choose to knit a tweedy cardigan which echoes the mossy palette of Conic Hill, a delicate jumper recalling a favourite plant found on Rannoch Moor, or a shawl sparked by the energy of the Highlands’ first “electric village”. Each design is paired with an exploratory essay which sets Kate’s designs and inspiration in their richer context. From Rob Roy’s romantic (mis)representation to the beautiful songs of Donnchadh Bàn; from Loch Lomond’s built environment to ways of seeing Rannoch Moor, Kate’s writing reveals the West Highland Way as, first and foremost, a social landscape with an important cultural history. Kate’s words and designs are accompanied by Tom’s stunning photography, depicting the West Highland Way in all seasons of the year. Why not turn these pages to walk, read and knit with Kate and Tom? Open up this book, join them on their journey, and make your own West Highland Way. A Ravelry download code is included.

Kate Davies Argyll’s Secret Coast
Patterns

Kate Davies Argyll’s Secret Coast

£24.00
Join Kate, Tom and friends on a journey through a beautiful corner of Argyll. Through words and pictures, knitting and writing, history and photography, this book explores the beautiful and intriguing landscape of Cowal, also known as Argyll's Secret Coast. Geographically proximate to lowland Scotland but topographically distinct; separated from the Highlands by land, yet united to the whole of Argyll by water; Cowal's is a landscape of hidden places, surprising tales, and many secrets. This book celebrates the Secret Coast, but while doing so it also asks a series of larger questions about what it means to make -and make-up- the story of a place. How do we read the traces of the past in the spaces of the present? What do we see when we look at Cowal's marginal and coastal landscapes? Which local tales are best remembered, and which narratives really deserve commemoration? The book includes 12 brand-new designs by Kate, beautiful photography by Tom, and a series of thought-provoking essays exploring the history, landscape and built heritage of the Secret Coast from writers Alex Hale, Michael Hartley, Jamie Stewart Jones, Gilbert Márkus and Stephen Mullen.

Kate Davies Inspired by Islay

£19.99
In this stunning new collection with her own Buachaille yarn, Kate takes inspiration from Islay’s landscape to create twelve new designs. From modern haps to traditional kilt hose; from Fairisle hoodies to cabled cardigans; the designs are arranged in four “stories” each of which explores a different island locale. Looking out beyond the lighthouse, there is once again that restless end-of-summer feeling: to knit a sweater, to tell a story, to turn your face to the sun as you prepare for darker nights and colder days … A collection of 10 designs, inspired by a beautiful tidal landscape Essays and photography, celebrating the island and its story Like many other artists, makers and writers, Kate Davies and Tom Barr have been inspired by Davaar, the spectacular tidal island whose rocky silhouette defines the Campbeltown coastline. Kate began by creating a new collection of garments and accessories and, alongside this balanced and varied range of Scottish knitwear, Kate and Tom tell the story of Davaar in words and pictures exploring the shifting relationship of land and water, the island’s distinctive and immediately recognisable built structures, its interesting wartime experience, and the controversial painting and preservation of what is now its most famous feature. With Tom’s beautiful photography celebrating the landscape of south Kintyre, this is a book to be inspired by, and to think with, as well as to knit from. It’s time to cast on, and to set forth for Davaar…

Kate Davies Inkling

Kate Davies Inkling

£20.00
An inkling might be regarded as the very beginning of a thought … After an inspiring residency with the British Council and Applied Arts Scotland, Kate Davies took up inkle weaving and found that the experience of learning a new skill, completely from scratch, profoundly revivified her creative practice. Learning how to weave narrow patterned bands on an inkle loom allowed Kate to reflect upon the interconnections between different cultures and practices of making across the global north and south, and also helped her to approach the design process in a new way. The fifteen creative and colourful projects in this book are the result of such reflections. Alongside eleven patterns for hand-knitting — produced in Kate’s signature clear style, across an inclusive size range—are a selection of simple projects to weave on an inkle loom. This fresh, spirited, and colourful collection reveals the far-reaching creative potential of approaching design with a beginner’s mind and asking oneself, what if? Might you be inspired by some inklings of your own? Book includes 11 garment and accessory patterns for hand-knitting in Kate’s Milarrochy Tweed yarn, plus 4 drafts for plain and pick-up patterns to weave on an inkle loom. Your mind haes a joy o’creation laek writin a rhyme — hit’s nae lee — whin your fingers and wires in relation maks da colours an patterns agree! Stella Sutherland, Da Allover In Allover, Kate Davies has gathered together a colourful collection to capture the joy of stranded knitting. Inside thisbook you’ll find fourteen designs that are bold, playful, and eclectic. Influenced by northern colourwork traditions from Norway and Sweden to Iceland and Shetland, there are fourteen designs to choose from, including graphic hats and mitts and cosy yoke pullovers and cardigans. In Starnkeeker, the familiar monochrome motifs of Selbu accessories are adapted for a colour- blocked Argyle vest, while the Tìoraidh cardigan reveals how a small “filler” motif might become a two tone pattern’s main attraction. Kate encourages you to mix things up as well: many of the patterns are charted and photographed in several different different colourways in patterns that are full of knitterly inspiration and opportunities for play. Whether you are whipping up a jolly pair of Pouzles, or taking your time over a show-stopping piece like Schene, there’s much creative joy to be found in the pages of this colourful book.
